STEMzone

STEMzone logoThree UGA graduate students standing in a parking lot asked, “What can we do to increase visibility of STEM research at UGA?”

Echoes of that conversation grew into STEMzone, an interactive science outreach event held before select UGA football games. The students realized that STEMzone’s success rested on dynamic science communicators and interactive booths, so they set out to facilitate science communication training and logistical support for interested groups.

Typical Yearly Schedule

STEMzone Booth Info sessions (~September)

Who are we? What do we do? How can you get involved? Our info sessions are a no-commitment meeting where you can learn more about STEMzone UGA and how you can build your planning, leadership, or science communication skills by participating in our organization.

Refining your STEMzone Booth concept session (~October)

Designing a booth for STEMzone is a bit different than a traditional outreach booth that you might set up at a science fair. Game days are busy and you have lots of competition from other activities (and the other booths). This workshop helps our volunteers design a visually engaging booth that has a single clear message.

Developing Face-to-Face (F2F) Scicomm strategies session (~October)

The success of each STEMzone event rests on our ability to dynamically communicate science. This workshop uses improv to help booth volunteers develop strategies to engage visitors to their booths.

STEMzone before Home Football Game (~November)

This is the main event! The interactive, student-lead, science outreach event held before the home football game.

Refining and rebooting your booth session (~ March)

This workshop reviews the fall home game event to identify areas to develop for existing booths. We brainstorm ideas to implement version 2 booths at the G-day game.

STEMzone at G-Day game (Spring semester)
